Ann Mohan is an Artist and Color enthusiast. Her belief is, Color is Science and the development of Color is an Artform, which enables her to create soulful and eclectic experiences.
Using her hand dyed fabrics of linen, cotton and silk she paints with fabric and threads. A newer form of surface design is her use of soymilk and earth pigments as paints with more organic tones created and mixed with the vibrants of dyes.
My Fiber Arts and Mixed Media Creative Process
A new piece of art starts from an inspiration for me,
an experience of any origin that excites or speaks deeply.
Urban abstracts have a palette of concrete colors, brick, soot, decay for example. That leads me to a technique of soymilk and earth pigments. The application of the pigments is a slower process requiring some layering and curing. Field work or studio work , textures are brought to life. The textured linen, cotton or canvas then serves as a backdrop for further layers or becomes the focal point. The cloth guides me and the story unfolds.
Not all works use the same tools. Fiber reactive dyes deliver a full range of values for chosen colors. My Pojagi has an outdoorsy color palette on linen. I dye and mix the desired colors in my wet studio. The process of dyeing allows me to dye on an as needed basis, even design as I go, without stashing loads of commercial fabrics. It takes a bit longer, but oh so worth it.
Finally, the piece’s message or use dictates the stitch method.
